Types of Assessment

There are many types of assessments that may be appropriate and beneficial to you in addressing your difficulties.

One of the goals of any initial meeting with me and indeed the initial assessment is to understand the nature of your difficulties and what type of counselling or psychotherapy may be of benefit to you. An initial assessment will likely include all of the following:

  • how and when your difficulties arose
  • how these difficulties have affected your life
  • what events or circumstances make things worse
  • what you have tired (with and without success) to cope with these difficulties
  • As part of your assessment, you will be asked to complete some questionnaires and checklists. Different types of treatments, will be more or less effective, depending on the level of severity. Questionnaires and surveys are important tools used to understand the degree of your difficulties (i.e., are the mild, moderate and severe), as well as to monitor and track your progress through treatment if required. However, results of surveys and questionnaires are always supplemented with the information gathered through a structured clinical interview, designed to methodically assess a number of relevant domains of well-being, functioning and clinical symptoms.

Monitoring your level of difficulty weekly is an important part of maximizing the benefit of treatment. Completing a checklist of difficulties and symptoms each week will provide me with objective information on how you are doing and will enable you to play an active role in managing your treatment.
